Fact-check:Video of Sharjah fire wrongly attributed to Russian attack on Ukraine

Claim:

On June 2, a post was published on X with a video and a caption stating that Russia had attacked Ukraine.

Fact check:

  • A reverse image search reveals the video was earlier posted on X by an account named Weather Monitor on June 1.
  • According to the post, the video shows “a massive fire at Hamriyah Port in Sharjah, UAE,” which erupted on May 31, 2025.
  • On May 31, the Peninsula Qatar published the same video and added captions to the video footage: “A massive fire broke out Saturday at AI Hamriyah Port in Sharjah.”
  • On June 1, many local media outlets, including The National and Khaleej Times, successively reported on this massive fire, also announcing that the blaze had been extinguished after 24 hours.
  • According to Reuters and AFP, Russia launched an attack on Ukraine in the early hours of June 6. However, this event does not align with the time shown in the original post. Given that this event did genuinely occur, the X post from June 2 was particularly misleading.

Verdict

Out of context.

The video depicts a fire at Sharjah port on May 31, not a Russian attack on Ukraine. The post published by X account Indian Observer (@ag_journalist) on June 2 is out of context.
