One widely shared clip claimed authorities gave out potatoes to boost funeral attendance, while others posted purported aerial footage of the procession. Verification found that the “potatoes handout” video actually repurposes footage from a past Tasu’a (nazri) charity food distribution, while portions of the aerial footage are AI-generated. The reuse of old footage and AI-generated video are common misinformation campaign tactics that can easily mislead the public. This report examines both claims, tracing their origins and analyzing visual characteristics in detail.

1. On July 4, 2026, X user @Militarymedia5 posted an aerial video captioned as showing “the funeral scene of Martyr Imam Ali Khamenei,” which received 69,200 views.
2. On July 7, 2026, X user @navidmohebbi posted a video with a caption stating: “If you want to know how the regime brought attendees to Khamenei’s not-so-impressive funeral, this explains how. The majority of Iranians live below the poverty line, and the regime distributes free bananas and potatoes to bring people in.” The post received 28,100 views.

1. Aerial Video of Funeral Crowds
(1) Visual Feature Comparison with Authentic Aerial Footage
Tehran’s Mosalla complex has a distinctive blue dome, which is absent from the video in question; the real site also features a multi-tiered courtyard layout rather than a flat, single-level structure. By contrast, the viral video shows a large crowd gathered on what appears to be an entirely flat, single-level surface.
(2) Frame-level Analysis
Multiple visual anomalies were identified in the footage: overall resolution is low; the crowd’s movement patterns defy physical logic, with people appearing to pass through background elements such as trees; and text, flags, and architectural structures all show noticeable geometric distortion and inconsistent proportions.
(3) AI-detection Results
Hive Moderation’s AI detection tool returned a 99.9% confidence score that the video was AI-generated, while Zhuque AI Detection Assistant returned 95.14%.
(4) Dissemination Analysis
The video was primarily circulated by social media accounts, with the highest-performing post reaching roughly 88,000 views. As of this report, no authoritative media outlet or official channel has cited or reshared the video.
2. Video of Banana and Potato Distribution
(1) Source Analysis
The earliest known high-resolution version of the video was posted on June 24 by Instagram users @karbalayi_asghar_mohseni and @holding_dr_fruit_quality, at least a week before the funeral, and in Miandoab, in western Iran, not Tehran, where the funeral was held.
The original post was tagged #Muharram #Heyat #Miandoab #Nazari #Iran, linking it to the Islamic month of Muharram.
June 24, 2026 corresponded to Tasu’a, the day before Ashura, when Shia Muslims mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussein at the Battle of Karbala. Volunteer stations in Iran and elsewhere traditionally distribute free food and drink and hold mourning processions on this occasion.

Additional videos documenting the same event surfaced on social media within the same time window. These videos are visually consistent with the viral clip in terms of setting, food distributed, and overall atmosphere, further corroborating its true origin.
Taken together, the date, location, visual characteristics, and earliest source posts indicate that the footage actually documents a traditional Nazri food distribution held on June 24, 2026 (Tasu’a).
(4) Account Analysis
The X account @navidmohebbi describes its owner in its bio as an “Iran analyst. Former political prisoner. Nonpartisan,” based in Washington, D.C. The account has previously described the Islamic Republic of Iran as a brutal dictatorship that has forced millions of Iranians into exile and has characterized the Iranian government as unable to meet the country’s basic needs, offering “only oppression.”
(5) Dissemination Analysis
On June 24, 2026, Instagram users @karbalayi_asghar_mohseni and @holding_dr_fruit_quality posted the video with hashtags tying it to the Islamic month of Muharram. The following day, Instagram users @miandoabpress_ir and @miandoab.gulmalilar1 posted the same footage with captions explicitly identifying it as documenting nazri food distribution in Miandoab.
On July 7, 2026, X user Navid Mohebbi (@navidmohebbi) re-edited and re-cropped the video, claiming it showed vegetables being handed out at Khamenei’s funeral to draw attendees. The same day, X user @JBreakingNews reshared the clip, reframing the narrative to claim that millions of Iranians lack access to food.
