On August 26, 2026, a debris flow triggered by a glacial collapse in Nepal struck the China–Nepal border area, bringing huge destruction and causing mass casualties. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) initially classified the seismic signal as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake before revising it to an M5.2 landslide. Within hours of the disaster, a video showing floodwaters destroying a village began circulating on X, with captions claiming that a “Xizang M4.4 earthquake triggered Nepal floods.” The video soon exhibited cross-platform and cross-language dissemination trends on social media. Verification confirms that the footage actually shows a flash flood which occurred in India on August 5, 2025. After authoritative information was later released, the “earthquake” narrative was dropped from the misinformation, but the footage continued to be misrepresented as “on-site footage of the Nepal debris flow” and kept circulating. By pairing old footage with new narratives, the post exploited public concern over a real disaster to gain credibility, while crowding out critical information during a crucial rescue period. This report traces the clip’s origin and its dissemination path.

On August 26, 2026, X user @GWoznica posted a video of a flood destroying a village, accompanied by a French caption claiming: “The images coming from #Nepal are terrifying. The earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 that struck last night in Tibet triggered #avalanches of ice and #landslides. They formed blockages in the region’s rivers that eventually gave way, creating this massive wave of water, mud, and rocks that swept everything in its path… #flood.” The post received approximately 3 million views, 7,314 likes, and 2,257 replies on the social media platform, and has been reposted and cited by multiple users.

1. Source Tracing

Reverse image search using key frames of the video shows that the footage posted by X user @GWoznica is highly consistent with the first 38 seconds of the first video in a post video shared by X account @sentdefender on August 6, 2025. The latter’s caption explicitly described it as a flash flood caused by heavy rainfall in Dharali village, Uttarakhand, northern India, which destroyed multiple houses.

Additionally, an approximately 62-second on-site video posted by X user @SunilNavprabhat on August 5, 2025, is also highly consistent with the above footage, with its caption likewise featuring location keywords such as “Uttarkashi,” “Dharali,” and “Kheer Ganga,” pointing to the Uttarkashi area in Uttarakhand, India.

2. Visual Analysis

Through comparison of visual details, the video posted by X user @GWoznica is highly consistent with that shared by X account @sentdefender. While the clips from X user @SunilNavprabhat show slight differences in shooting angles, multiple consistent key visual elements can be identified across all footage: the same bird’s‑eye view of the valley, red‑roofed and green‑roofed buildings, mudflow channels, the evolution of dust and mud clouds, and the rooftops visible at the bottom of the frames.

3. Cross‑Referencing with Media Reports

The Hindu’s official X account @the_hindu published strikingly similar visuals, captioned: “August 5, 2025: Heavy rain triggered flash floods in Dharali, a high‑altitude village in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, destroying multiple houses.” This corroborates that the footage is from the 2025 Uttarkashi flash floods in India, not the current Gyirong Port disaster.

4. Review of the Involved Seismic Signal: Not an Earthquake-Triggered Glacial Collapse

On August 26, 2026, a severe debris flow disaster did occur on the China–Nepal border. However, the disaster process does not match the description by X user @GWoznica, who claimed that a “magnitude 4.4 earthquake in Xizang triggered a glacial collapse and landslide.” The involved seismic signal was reviewed separately by seismic monitoring agencies in China and the United States after the event.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) website initially automatically reported the event designated as ‘us7000tbwb’ as an M4.4 earthquake. Based on a review of nearby station records, long-period waveforms, and satellite imagery, the USGS determined that the primary seismic energy was generated by a glacier collapse and associated debris flow, not by a tectonic earthquake occurring at that location. The USGS currently labels the event as an “M5.2 Landslide,” where M5.2 indicates the magnitude or energy equivalent of the recorded ground motion, and does not denote a “magnitude 5.2 landslide.”

The China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) also initiated a review process for this disaster as a non-tectonic (non-earthquake) event. According to an announcement issued on August 28 by its subordinate National Center for Seismic Data Science, the center integrated continuous waveform data from seismic stations in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region and ten seismic stations in Nepal, and subsequently updated its review results on August 27. The relocated result shows that the relevant event occurred at 10:52:20 (Beijing Time) on August 26, with a magnitude of 5.1, approximately 20 kilometers from the Gyirong Port.

Therefore, both the non-tectonic event review by the China Earthquake Networks Center and the USGS determination of a glacier-related collapse and debris flow collectively indicate that the event did generate seismic signals detectable by monitoring networks. However, it is inaccurate to describe the event as a “magnitude 4.4 tectonic earthquake in Xizang triggering a glacial collapse and landslide.”

5. Actual Cause of the Disaster

On August 27, the Department of Emergency Management of the Xizang Autonomous Region published on its website that the debris flow disaster on the China–Nepal border was triggered by a high-altitude glacial collapse within Nepalese territory. Experts from the Geological Disaster Investigation and Monitoring Center of the China Aero Geophysical Survey and Remote Sensing Center for Natural Resources explained that the glacier collapse released massive ice masses that rapidly descended along the gully, entraining glacial till and evolving into a debris flow, which impacted Gyirong Port and continued downstream toward Nepal.

Also on August 27, CNN cited Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority geologist Prakash Pokharel, who reviewed Planet Labs satellite imagery and attributed the flash flood to an ice-rock avalanche on the Nepalese side. CNN later published Planet Labs comparison images showing significant changes to a large ice section near Nepal’s Langtang Lirung peak before and after the event.

On September 1, Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) published its first situation report, identifying the ice-rock avalanche source area in the upper Bhote Koshi basin near the Lhende Khola, about 20 km upstream of Rasuwagadhi. Its preliminary analysis of high-res satellite imagery found that rock-glacier material detached from the slope, rapidly moved down the valley, entrained loose sediments, and evolved into a debris flow.

6. Account Analysis

X user @GWoznica, whose account was created in May 2011, has approximately 12,500 followers. His verified identity indicates that he is a weather anchor and reporter for LCI (the TF1 Group news channel), and also a contributor to MeteoredFR (tameteo.com) and TF1info. As of this verification, his post claiming that the Xizang M4.4 earthquake triggered floods in Nepal was no longer accessible.

A review of X user @GWoznica’s public posts was conducted using social media analytics tools. An analysis of 500 publicly available posts revealed that the account predominantly covers extreme weather events from various locations around the world. Due to the widespread impact and significant consequences of these extreme weather phenomena, the overall tone of the posts conveys a sense of concern and urgency.

7. Dissemination Analysis:

During the circulation of this false video on X, videos posted by different accounts varied somewhat in duration and shooting angles, but the core imagery was highly similar, and all were framed within the narrative of the China–Nepal border debris flow disaster.

1)Cross-Platform and Cross-Language Dissemination Characteristics

The false video first appeared on X on the very day of the disaster (August 26), with accounts @GWoznica and @sinanakyuz73 serving as the primary dissemination nodes. The following day, account @rumina_12vw further circulated it. On that day, these accounts disseminated the content in French, Turkish, and Japanese languages, respectively. The three posts collectively accumulated over 7.67 million views, rapidly drawing significant attention from social media users.

Users on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube also participated in the dissemination, involving accounts including @Jeff Gallop, @花蓮新聞網, @karakoram_escape, and @thehistorypayanam1930, which spread the content in English and Traditional Chinese. However, compared to X, the reach and engagement on these platforms were notably lower.

2) Narrative Shift and Visual Anchoring: The "Decoupling" and "Persistence" of False Imagery

The dissemination of this misinformation did not maintain a single narrative throughout, but rather underwent an evolution from a “causal misattribution narrative” to the “persistence of mismatched visuals.”

In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, posts represented by account @GWoznica misattributed the “Xizang M4.4 earthquake” as the direct cause of the debris flow, accompanied by high-impact flood footage to enhance visual effect. In the early stages of a sudden disaster, authoritative information is limited, and the public exhibits a strong demand for understanding the causes of the event. Meanwhile, initial seismic monitoring systems had automatically reported the relevant seismic signal as an M4.4 earthquake. Against this backdrop, the simplified narrative of “seismic signal—earthquake trigger—glacial collapse and flood” gained considerable surface credibility and spread widely within a short period, as it simultaneously satisfied the dual needs of rapid causal attribution and visual corroboration. The post by account @GWoznica serves as a typical example of this phase.

Subsequently, as the USGS revised the relevant seismic signal to one generated by glacial collapse and debris flow, and clarified that no tectonic earthquake had occurred that could have triggered the disaster, the explicit causal framing of “an earthquake triggering the debris flow” in earlier posts gradually weakened. It was increasingly replaced by broader disaster descriptors such as “Nepal floods” or “China–Nepal border debris flow.”

However, the correction of the causal narrative was not accompanied by a simultaneous verification and correction of the video’s source. The footage continued to be widely circulated as on-the-ground imagery of the Nepal or China–Nepal border disaster. For instance, Japanese-language user @rumina_12vw stated, “Nepal’s streets are getting swallowed up by floods”; Turkish-language user @Evin_Kader_ wrote, “Adverse weather conditions in the disaster area on the China-Nepal border have halted search-and-rescue operations”; Facebook user Mark Omali commented, “in Nepal these mountains are spiritual and deadly”; and Instagram user indiaflash2026 described it as “A devastating avalanche in Nepal.”

In short, the misinformation persisted through a process of “narrative decoupling”: the video was uncoupled from the false “earthquake-triggered” narrative, but remained bound to the misattribution of the event as the Nepal debris flow—including its location, timing, and context.

3)Repeated Misappropriation of the Same Event Footage:

Upon review, this flood disaster video (originally filmed in Dharali village, Uttarakhand, India) was repeatedly repurposed between August 2025 and August 2026 to refer to disaster events in different countries or regions:

On August 19, 2025, the video was circulated online and labeled as footage of flooding in the Swat or Buner regions of Pakistan. AFP Fact Check subsequently published a report identifying the original filming location as Dharali village in Uttarakhand, India, rather than anywhere in Pakistan.

In September 2025, the video was again tied to the Matai fault zone barrier lake in Hualien, Taiwan, and Typhoon Mianjasha damage. The Taiwan FactCheck Center later confirmed the footage was unrelated to Hualien.

On August 26, 2026, the same video resurfaced and went viral, this time tied to the China–Nepal border debris flow.

Across all three episodes, the same source footage—from one original event—was reused with different location, event, and time labels to fit varying narratives. This pattern of repeated reactivation and recontextualization, using the footage as generic disaster imagery, exhibits a clear case of “cross-event misappropriation.”

Background

On August 26, 2026, following the China–Nepal border disaster, Chinese President Xi Jinping issued immediate directives, urging all-out efforts in searching for the missing, timely relocation and settlement of affected populations, and medical treatment for the injured, so as to minimize casualties. The directives also emphasized the need to strengthen monitoring and early warning systems, guard against secondary disasters, and fully implement flood control measures to resolutely protect the safety of people’s lives and property.

Under these directives, the National Commission for Disaster Reduction and the Ministry of Emergency Management activated a Level-II emergency response, coordinating rescue operations, evacuations, and infrastructure repairs. According to official interim updates, central authorities dispatched relief supplies and allocated funds for disaster response and recovery. Fire rescue, armed police, and other units were deployed to the site, while threatened populations and stranded tourists around Gyirong Port were gradually relocated. The figures on personnel, supplies, and funding are preliminary and subject to further official confirmation.

While conducting domestic rescue operations, China also actively responded to Nepal’s requests. At the request of the Nepalese government, China dispatched tunnel search-and-rescue experts, provided emergency relief supplies, and offered cash aid. The two countries also set up a real-time information-sharing mechanism, with China providing disaster zone imagery, satellite data, and hydrometeorological information to support Nepal’s rescue planning and damage assessment. On August 30, the first 50-ton shipment of emergency relief supplies arrived at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport. Additionally, the Chinese government provided US$2 million in emergency cash assistance to Nepal, while the Red Cross Society of China contributed US$200,000 to the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund.

After authoritative corrections, the earthquake link was dropped, but the footage continued to be misrepresented as “on-site footage of the Nepal disaster,” tied to the wrong location, time, and event.

The post repurposed old footage from another country as evidence of a new disaster— a typical misleading practice which can be especially harmful during rescue efforts. The public should verify the original source, time, and official updates before sharing disaster videos, and stay cautious of old footage being recycled with new claims.
